It's almost time. Jay-Z will release his new album "Blueprint 3" on September 11th. Yesterday the final tracklisting for the album leaked. As I did previously with Eminem's "Relapse" album, I thought it might be fun to guess what the songs will sound like based solely on the titles and Jay-Z's previous material. Let's go.
"WHAT WE TALKIN' ABOUT" FEAT. LUKE STEELE (OF EMPIRE OF THE SUN)
I spoke about this collaboration the other day. I see this one being a heavy, guitar driven lead off to the album. I also expect it to be a little quirky production wise given that Jay is introducing this guy to the world:
Think "Kingdom Come" on acid.
"THANK YOU"
I have a feeling this might be Jay's letter to the Rap game. Maybe a little more down-tempo with Hov speaking on his career...maybe a YE production? It would be cool if this cut was in a similar sound to the highly underrated "Lucky Me" off "In My Lifetime Vol. 1"...but with a stronger hook.
"D.O.A. (DEATH OF AUTO-TUNE)"
This has already been smackin' y'all over the heads for a minute. The day it leaked the shit nearly shut down Twitter. And while it didn't exactly kill Auto-Tune, it did make clown ass rappers think twice about gettin' their T-Pain Roger Troutman on.
"RUN THIS TOWN" FEAT. RIHANNA & KANYE WEST
The second single from "Blueprint 3" hasn't grown on me at all. I really dig Kanye's verse and Rihanna's hook is cool (although it would have been better on a Rihanna track). I despise Jay's flow on this song. Thankfully, Jay isn't gonna do that "funny voice shit" all over "Blueprint 3" like Eminem did on "Relapse."
"EMPIRE STATE OF MIND" FEAT. ALICIA KEYS
Epic. That's what I think the result will be here. Clearly an ode to New York City, this could probably be called "Welcome To New York City Part 2":
But unlike "Welcome To New York City", this song is gonna lean more on the soulful side with Keys delivering a stirring hook as Jay paints a picture of one of the greatest cities on earth. Who else can't wait for this shit? I know it's the first song I'll be checkin' once it leaks.
"REAL AS IT GETS" FEAT. YOUNG JEEZY
My expectations for this one are kinda low. Probably somewhat of a generic beat as Jeezy pulls Jay back into the coke rap heavy. Can Jay still rap about coke? Yeah...but does he need to go there anymore? No way. I'm a Young Jeezy fan but I could have done without him being on "Blueprint 3." I would have much rather seen Nas swing by. You can see the song's title being incorporated into the hook. My guess is this will be one of the few weak links on the album.
"ON TO THE NEXT ONE" FEAT. SWIZZ BEATZ
"On To The Next One?" Is this about Swizz leaving Mashonda? I can picture this cut pretty clearly. Some vocal samples for the hook with a repeat of "On to the next one, on, on to the next one." It'll no doubt be dope as Swizz gives Jay somewhat of a bare canvas to rock over. I'm good as long as Swizzy keeps the flutes away:
"OFF THAT" FEAT. DRAKE
Interesting. You gotta hand it to Drake. To go from performing for small crowds in Toronto to signing million dollar deals and finding his way onto "Blueprint 3", the kid has had a pretty good year. He did take a small "L" when it was reported that "Off That" was going to be the second single from "BP3." Those plans were either nixed or never actually in motion. What will this one sound like? It would be cool if it was an old-school style Hip-Hop cut where the mics went back and forth...but I think we're gonna get a hook sung by Drake and Jay will spit for the ladies. The track will be solid but will it fit into the overall feel of "Blueprint 3?"
"A STAR IS BORN" FEAT. J.COLE
"Uhhhh...Memphis Bleek...that's J.Cole's seat." The title eludes to J. Cole, the first artist signed to Jay-Z's Roc Nation label. No pressure huh? This is going to be a classic cut in the same vein as "Coming of Age", the song that introduced Hip-Hop to Memphis Bleek:
Cole has way more solo potential than Bleek (again Bleek doesn't need Rap) and will no doubt shine on the worldwide platform that is "Blueprint 3." "A Star Is Born" no doubt:
"VENUS VS. MARS"
Jay has done this before:
I guess I'm going out on a limb a bit but based on the title I'm guessing this is going to be a women vs. men type cut looking at relationships. It's gonna be softer than "Bitches & Sisters" and might even see Jay opening up a little more about his relationship with Beyonce. This should be one of the albums better tracks given the wide array of events and topics Jay can touch on.
"ALREADY HOME" FEAT. KID CUDI
Futuristic aint it? Kanye is rumored to have produced this cut which will no doubt be full of soul...just a feel good cut about life. The combo of Jay-Z and KiD CuDi is an interesting one. He's the only guest on the album that I don't feel combines well with Jay although I'll definitely keep my ears open and my opinion reserved until I hear the track.
"HATE" FEAT. KANYE WEST
Uh oh. Jay and YE on a track together that's called "Hate?" Haters look out. You thought "99 Problems" was hard? This is the track on "Blueprint 3" that will be the first to have the word "banger" attached to it. You know Kanye is going to come with his best and Jay is sure to rip a few people to shreds (The Game anyone?). This is already one of my fav tracks and I haven't even heard it.
"REMINDER"
This one has got me stumped a bit..."Reminder"...could it be Jay reminding the DJ Webstar's of the world that he still owns this shit? Reminding Dame how big his bank account is? Or reminding us that 30's the new 20?...but now that he's almost 40, is 40 the new 30? Or is 40 still 40 and 30's still the new 20? My head is gonna explode.
"SO AMBITIOUS" FEAT. PHARRELL
"Blueprint 3" wasn't screamin' for a Pharrell appearance. Sorry. Yeah when they've gotten together it's usually been solid but I personally don't need that Neptunes sound on this album. The song will be a little soft and I feel will detract from the overall vibe. It's that buffer between the album's closing track...never a good sign.
"YOUNG FOREVER" FEAT. MR. HUDSON
Jay-Z hasn't hid the fact that he's getting older and even addressed being a grown ass man on "30 Something" from the "Kingdom Come" album. And while the title looks like it's going to be another way of addressing getting old in the Hip-Hop game, "Young" I'm sure refers to "Young Hov" and will be Jay-Z's outro letting the world know that even though he was born before the majority of his fans, Hip-Hop isn't getting rid of him, hundreds of millions or not.
