Super Bowl XLIV is this Sunday. The NFL has been on a string of amazing halftime shows which will continue this Sunday with The Who taking the stage. I mean just look at the past few years. We've had Prince, Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen. Unfortunately the NFL hasn't always delivered when it has come to the biggest game of the year. Here are 6 Of The Worst Super Bowl Halftime Shows.
6. 2004 - SUPER BOWL XXXVIII - DIDDY, JANET JACKSON, JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE, NELLY & KID ROCK
I "choose" to never watch this again. Janet was ok off the top (no pun intended) but Diddy manages to ruin the entire show only 3:30 in. At about 4:20 (again no pun intended) something happens that you will never see again. Nelly and Murphy Lee performing at the Super Bowl halftime show. Man how far some have fallin'. The only true shining moment of this whole commotion, not surprisingly, was Kid Rock. If you really need to see the "wardrobe malfunction" again, it's at 12:21. This halftime show was obviously a lot better than some of them but it was the overall production that was a total mess. Then again, it was MTV that produced it and they've evolved since to "Jersey Shore" so maybe that's a good excuse.
5. 1992 - SUPER BOWL XXVI - GLORIA ESTEFAN AND OLYMPIC FIGURE SKATERS BRIAN BOITANO AND DOROTHY HAMILL
The halftime show for Super Bowl XXVI was centered around a "winter magic" theme because it took place in Minnesota (how original? Get it? 'Cause it's cold in Minnesota). There wasn't an ounce of testosterone running through this halftime show. Between the Olympic figure skaters, to the weird dance numbers to whatever was happening at 5:17 of the first video, this show was a mess. It was such a mess that FOX was able to lure away 20 million+ viewers from the game for a special episode of "In Living Color." Here's a clip:
4. 1995 - SUPER BOWL XXIX - INDIANA JONES FEAT. PATTI LABELLE
How bad was this halftime show? There aren't any videos or photos of it online. And considering some of the other shows people captured and uploaded, that's "bad, real bad Michael Jackson." Disneyland had just opened a new "Indiana Jones" ride so they thought what better way to celebrate than to use the halftime show as their own personal promotional vehicle. For some reason they included Tony Bennett and Patti Labelle in the festivities. For whatever reason the halftime show ended with everyone singing "Can You Feel The Love Tonight."
3. 1982 - SUPER BOWL XVI - UP WITH PEOPLE SALUTE THE 60S AND MOTOWN
Ladies and gentleman. Please welcome the whitest people in the world performing a tribute to Motown. Things really start to nosedive at 3:20. Even the lady who is supposed to bring the Soul aint got any. This is just one big mess. Something about this whole thing screams lets all drink the kool-aid after the show. Weird...just weird.
2. 1991 - SUPER BOWL XXV - NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK/DISNEY CHARACTERS
Here are some facts about this show. It wasn't shown live (preempted due to "Desert Storm" coverage) and was shown edited post-game. Unfortunately it appears they forgot to take out New Kids in the editing process. Nothing screams gridiron battle like Jonathan, Jordan, Donnie, Joey and that other guy. I don't know what's more amazing. That New Kids performed at the most important football game of the year or that someone took the time to record this off their television.
1. 1989 - SUPER BOWL XXII - ELVIS PRESTO AND A REALLY BAD CARD TRICK
As you can see by the video, people were supposed to cheer wildly for one of the cards. Unfortunately (as the crowd shots show) people either just wanted to see the football start again or were out getting beer and hot dogs. Also, when people hold up their cards at 1:50 of the video it appears some people have different cards thus making this a big Super Bowl fail (maybe Presto should play for the Bills?) It doesn't help that "Elvis" is a terrible Elvis impersonator.
