If there is one thing rappers love to do it's complain to the soundman during concerts. My mic is too low, my mic is too high, turn me up, turn me down...these are all common requests and words spit at the soundman during Rap concerts. In some cases, the soundman is a complete fuck up or sometimes the rapper uses the sound as an excuse to cover up a shitty show. Regardless, here are 8 Instances of Rappers Having Issues With The Soundman.
SOULJA BOY
Soundman issues at 1:10 of the video
The fact that Soulja Boy even needs a soundman is the most surprising thing about this video to me. I, like I'm sure most people in the crowd, couldn't really understand what Soulja Boy was saying anyways (something about bathing apes and cars) and no one really seemed to notice that the shitting rapping and shitty music only became shitty rapping at some point. Thankfully, everything was fixed and Soulja Boy began dancing like a woman at Club Crucial.
TYLER, THE CREATOR
Sidebar: Don't all soundmen look the same? Baseball cap, black shirt, looking like they might be banned from school playgrounds...anyways, during The Roxy's holiday show, Tyler, The Creator celebrated the Christmas season by getting arrested and getting very angry at a soundman. Here is the footage of Tyler in the cop car:
As you'll hear, Odd Future fans made some excellent points to the cops about Tyler's arrest including "fucking faggot", "don't touch me asshole" and "pig."
DMX
Soundman issues at 2:05 of the video
During a performance in St. Louis, DMX ran into some issues with his mic...because everyone knows, it's always better to bark with clarity. The funniest thing here is X seems to have some real problems locating the soundman. I swear, DMX asking "where he at?" could become its own drinking game. I don't hear any difference in the mic between X complaining and continuing on. This X incident was probably worse than this one.
HOPSIN
This is by far the funniest video of the bunch, thanks mainly to the white guy who keeps saying "he did this 2 weeks ago." If you don't find the white guy in the crowd saying "he did this 2 weeks ago" funny, you have no soul and will be condemned to a life of listening to Big Sean.
KRS-ONE
KRS-One had apparently been having sound issues all-night at this show in Vancouver back in 2011. I'm sure everyone in attendance knew he was having sound issues because...well...they were in attendance. But instead of bitching out the soundman and moving on like any rapper would do, KRS took the opportunity to preach about soundchecking. Do you think KRS preaches to his kids about the importance of eating cereal when they won't eat their cereal? "What you have here is Cheerios, they are delicious and are a breakfast item. You should eat them as to not be hungry before lunch."
T.I.
Soundman issues at 3:10 of the video
This video is a great example of the contradiction that is T.I. At 3:10 of the video, T.I. looks like he is about to straight murder one the soundman...all while holding who we believe to be his daughter. This is a short clip but it's probably the only one out of them all where the soundman's life may actually have been in danger. We are talking mid 2000's T.I. here folks.
ONYX
Soundman issues throughout the video...but things start getting a little hectic at 1:39 of the video
During a performance in Munich, Fredro Starr of ONYX begins having some serious issues with his mic. He and Sticky Fingaz proceed to try and fix the problem themselves on the soundboard after not receiving the help they needed from the soundman. As the sound issues grow more hopeless by the minute, Fredro decides to fix the sound by beginning to trash the stage. Not surprisingly, this does not fix the sound.
M.O.P.
During a concert in Belgium, M.O.P. decide they've had enough with the sound issues, say fuck the soundman, and proceed to end their concert. Good news though folks, M.O.P. are going to come down and drink with you...because you know, it's always great to spend money on a concert ticket, have the artist duck out early, and come down to drink with you...where they are drinking for free and you're paying. Sounds like a sweet deal. To be fair, there seem to be mic issues throughout the video although the complaints about mics being turned off are odd since the mics are on well enough to go crazy at the soundman. Here is a shorter video that is pretty much just M.O.P.'s exit from the stage as they Ante Up the fuck outta there:
