iTunes will shut down its Ping social network with the next version of iTunes expected to launch later this year.
Speaking at the AllThingsD D10 Conference, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the following about the failed social network:
“We tried Ping, and I think the customer voted and said ‘This isn’t something that I want to put a lot of energy into.’”
The idea behind Ping was to create a social network centered around talking about music, connecting with like minded music fans and most importantly, buying music.
According to reports, Apple will replace Ping with closer integration with Facebook and Twitter.
